PALMDALE – The final of three of the City of Palmdale’s “Ready, Set, Go Green!” recycling events will take place this Saturday, July 30 from 11 am to 4 pm at DryTown Water Park, 3850-B East Avenue S in Palmdale.

Participants are asked to bring recyclable cans and plastic bottles, as well as gently worn clothing, to DryTown. In exchange, they will receive opportunity tickets to win a great prize.

At the first two events a Squire Stratocaster Guitar, retail value of $379, which was donated to the event by the Guitar Center in Palmdale and a solar powered backpack valued at $140, courtesy of Waste Management were given away.

“The more CRV bottles and cans you bring, the more opportunity tickets you can get,” said DryTown Recreation Coordinator Laura Rice.

The money generated by the donated recyclables will benefit South Antelope Valley Emergency Services (SAVES).

“The purpose of ‘Ready, Set, Go Green!’ is to raise awareness of the importance of recycling,” said Palmdale’s Administrative Analyst Ben Lucha.

Admission to DryTown Water Park is not included.

Waste Management will match all funds generated through residents’ donated recyclables.

The Sounds of the Supremes to Bring Motown Magic to Palmdale

Posted on July 29, 2011. Filed under: antelope valley, city of palmdale, fun, palmdale, palmdale entertainment, palmdale fun | Tags: , , , |

PALMDALE – Personifying a “sound” that influenced a generation, The Sounds of the Supremes, the only group of their type legally endorsed by Motown, will perform some of the biggest hits of the legendary Supremes at the Palmdale Amphitheater stage this Saturday, July 30 at 8 pm as part of the City of Palmdale’s Starlight Concert Series.

Admission is $5 for age 13 and older; guests 12 and younger are admitted free, and parking is free.

Since 1989, The Sounds of the Supremes, led by Kaaren Ragland, an Antelope Valley resident and former member of original Supreme Mary Wilson’s ’70s/’80s group, have achieved a remarkable degree of worldwide success. London’s What’s On described their incomparable energy packed show featuring more than 20 hit songs “a non-stop bravura performance of immense vitality recreating perfectly the frenetic style and sound of the original lineup.”

Ragland, along with fellow Sounds of the Supremes members Kathy Merrick and Althea Burkhalter, possess a wealth of experience in recording, television, cabaret, theater and musicals, and deliver a fantastic vocal blend on re-worked Motown classics, standards and contemporary songs, with stylish choreography and unrivaled glamour.

The Sounds of the Supremes will perform chart topping hits such as “You Keep Me Hanging On,” “Stop in the Name of Love,” “Where Did Our Love Go,” “Love Child,” “Nothing But Heartaches,” “Reflections,” “You Can’t Hurry Love,” “Back in My Arms Again,” “Baby Love,” “Floy Joy,” “Nathan Jones,” “Automatically Sunshine,” “Up the Ladder to the Roof,” “Love is Like an Itching in My Heart” and “Someday We’ll Be Together.”

Starlight Concert goers will also have an opportunity to win a solar powered backpack for recycling at the concert.

“At each Starlight Concert, the City of Palmdale and Waste Management are teaming up to spread the word about recycling through ‘Recycling Rocks,’” said Palmdale’s Sponsorship and Marketing Specialist Stella Knight. “We will be on the lookout for people who are properly separating their trash and recyclable. If we catch you, you can win a brand new solar backpack that can charge a laptop, cell phone, camera or MP3 player, courtesy of Waste Management.”

The solar backpacks retail for $140.

Following the Sounds of the Supremes will be The Rising, a tribute to Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, who will take the stage on Saturday, Aug. 6, performing a string of red-hot hits like “Born in the U.S.A.,” “Glory Days” and “Hungry Heart.” Cut from the worn denim of blue-collar towns, this group holds true to the artistic vision to honor both Springsteen and the fans. This house rocking, earthshaking, heart-stopping tribute delivers each song with the same power, heart and soul as the Boss.

The series closes with a performance by Garth Guy Live! on Saturday, Aug.13. Dean Simmons gives a dead-on “Garth” performance, nailing the walk, the talk, the laugh and Garth’s talent for truly entertaining his audiences while performing fan favorites like “Friends in Low Places,” “The Thunder Rolls” and “The Dance.”

Tickets are on sale now at the parks and recreation office and Palmdale Oasis Park Recreation Center.

The parks and recreation office, located at 38260 10th St. East, is open Monday through Thursday, 7:30 am to 6 pm, and accepts cash, check, Mastercard and Visa. Palmdale Oasis Park Recreation Center, 3850-A Avenue S, is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 3:30-8 pm, and Wednesday, 3:30-6:30 pm. The recreation center accepts check, Mastercard or Visa. Palmdale residents must bring proof of residency (California I.D., drivers license or current utility bill) to purchase a season pass at the resident fee.

The Palmdale Amphitheater is located at 2723 Rancho Vista Boulevard. All concerts begin at 8 pm, and gates open at 6 pm. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Carry-in food, beverages, coolers, alcohol and pets are not permitted. Food will be available for purchase.
