WHAT: Thursday Night on the Square event. Fifth of eight for 2011

WHEN: Thursday, July 28 – 5:30 pm to 9 pm.

WHERE: Poncitlán Square, 38315 9th Street East, Palmdale

(between Avenues Q-9 and Q-10.)

WHO: Children and families; food and craft vendors; Palmdale parks & recreation department staff; and R&B music by The Ambassadors of Soul.

WHY: Families, friends and neighbors from around the Antelope Valley will gather for an evening of FREE fun and relaxation in Palmdale.

BACKGROUND: Thursday Night on the Square, a series of summer events presented by the City of Palmdale, provides the community with free children’s activities, free live music, food vendors, and an open-air market. Weekly entertainment includes live music in the gazebo until 9 pm, sponsored by Valleywide Dental; Barnes & Noble Storytelling at 6:30 pm; and the new interactive show, Camp TNOTS, at 7:30 pm, sponsored by High Desert Medical Group. Free children’s activities include the all-new Game Garden featuring a variety of games, and the Children’s Art & Activity Center (for children age 12 and under). Each week, one lucky person caught “green-handed” – disposing of recyclable waste in the proper container – will win a solar-powered backpack capable of charging an mp3 player, cell phone, camera or laptop, courtesy of Waste Management.

Pets are not permitted, except dogs on July 28 for the Mardi Paws event. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and alcohol is not allowed.

This year’s sponsors include Anheuser-Busch Sales of Antelope Valley, Barnes & Noble Booksellers, Double D Cupcakes, The Gas Company, High Desert Broadcasting, High Desert Medical Group, Pars Restaurant, Valleywide Dental, Palmdale Regional Medical Center and Waste Management.

THEME: July 28 • Mardi Paws

In true New Orleans fashion, outfit your dog in Mardi Gras style to join a jazzy march around the square and compete for prizes. Kids can craft a colorful bell bracelet, décor a mask and create a Bourbon Street lantern. Enjoy the Stamp’n Station. Music: R&B by The Ambassadors of Soul.
